Contemplative Haiku Writing Workshop

With Crystal Simone Smith and Catherine Neill

Haiku is language distilled. It is the art of expressing the wonder and rawness of our experience with few words. With those words, we invoke imagery, tension, and the senses. Practitioners of haiku are meditative, many writing haiku daily, while being truly present in the natural world and their surroundings. In this course, we will learn the basics for writing haiku within a meditative environment. Meditation instruction will be offered.

Crystal Simone Smith is the author of Wildflowers: Haiku, Senryu, and Haibun (2016). Her work has appeared in numerous journals including Modern Haiku, Frogpond, Haibun Today, and Wishbone Moon Anthology. Her co-authored book, One Window's Light: A Collection of Haiku with Lenard D. Moore, L.Teresa Church, Gideon Young, and Sheila Smith McKoy was the winner of the 2018 Haiku Society of America’s Merit Book Award for best haiku anthology.

Catherine Neill is a longtime meditation practitioner and teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage.
