New to Meditation?

“It seems we all agree that training the body through exercise, diet, and relaxation is a good idea, but why don’t we think about training our mind?”

-Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche

Meditation is a series of tools and techniques to work with stress, anxiety and habitual mental patterns. It is a way to make the mind more stable and clear, less caught up in fear and avoidance. On a deeper level, meditation is a system for deeply familiarizing yourself with how the mind works in general, and for developing a more authentic and compassionate outlook on life.

Meditation is a practice that anyone can do. It is based on the radical idea that the natural state of the mind is not scattered, nervous, and confused, but rather calm, creative, and clear. Practicing regularly provides a way to settle into this natural state more often. At the Durham Shambhala Meditation Center, we begin by training in shamatha or mindfulness meditation. This foundational technique allows you to tune into the present moment at home, at work, or wherever you go in your day to day life.

Because you bring it with you everywhere you go, developing a healthier and more complete relationship with your own mind might just be the most important thing you ever do!
